Mitsubishi's iconic Lancer started out as a subcompact car in 1973 but has gone through a variety of designs and body styles throughout the decades, including rebrands of the Mitsubishi Mirage. Although the Lancer nameplate refers to a series of cars produced by the manufacturer overseas, from 2007 onward in the Japanese domestic market the "Lancer" refers mainly to the Lancer Evolution, as all others are marketed as the Galant Fortis.
Living up to its name, the 2004 model year of the progressive Lancer Evolution is the first domestically mass-produced car to receive aluminum roof paneling, and also gets Bilstein co-produced shock-absorbers and light-weight aluminum wheels from BBS. For its engine, the 2004 Lancer Evo comes fitted with a 2.0L 276 hp inline four-cylinder intercooler turbocharged engine mated with a five or six-speed manual transmission and in full-time 4WD. Newer model years such as the 2015 Lancer Evolution get a high-performance 2.0L 309 hp DOHC MIVEC turbocharged engine with Mitsubishi's S-AWC integrated vehicle dynamics control system and a highly efficient twin clutch SST five-speed manual transmission. Safety features like driver seat airbags and anti-theft systems come as standard.
