About 2009 TOYOTA Alphard

Even in a class with heavy contenders, Toyota's luxury MPV, the Alphard, shines one of the brightest. Appropriately named after the brightest star in the constellation Hydra, the Toyota Alphard sets the bar for luxury MPVs with a spacious and luxurious interior combined with the latest technologies to deliver a comfortable drive for both driver and passenger, regardless of lifestyle. Toyota has crowned the Alphard with a unique front emblem with the alpha letter in lowercase--a patrimony carried on in all its generations and an all-but symbol of its excellence. And since it's a Toyota, it goes without saying that you can rest easy while indulging in the Alphard. Keep reading on to learn more about the Alphard and its different options.

Origin

The Alphard was developed as Toyota's flagship MPV under the leadership of Hideyuki Iwata, the company's chief engineer. It was based mainly on the second-generation Previa/Estima and succeeded other minivan lines, including the Granvia and Regius. Though it was initially produced for the Asian market, the Alphard charmed drivers worldwide, ultimately leading to versions made for the global market.

1st Generation (AH10; 2002-2007)

Toyota's new top-of-the-line MPV boasted an impactful boxy design complete with a V-shaped grille that added an aggressive edge. Designed with the driver and passengers' needs in mind, the Alphard was available in two seating configurations--either a 7-seater with a 2-2-3 formation or an 8-seater with a 2-3-3 formation. It featured plenty of storage compartments in the center stack, center console, in front of the side passenger seat, and more. In 2003, Toyota debuted a hybrid version of the Alphard.

Engine options for the first generation Alphard were a 3.0L V6 six-cylinder VVT-i capable of 217 hp or a 2.4L inline four-cylinder VVT-i that developed 157 hp, both of which were gasoline vehicles. In contrast, the hybrid Alphard featured the 2.4L inline four-cylinder 2AZ-FXE petrol hybrid engine. Transmissions were a four-speed automatic for the gasoline vehicles and an e-CVT for the hybrid.

2nd Generation (AH20; 2008-2014)

Toyota released the second-generation Alphard in 2008 alongside its twin model, the Vellfire. In contrast to the Vellfire, which emphasized "strength and strong individuality," the Alphard was marketed as having an "elegant and sophisticated" design. Many design elements from the previous generation were carried over, such as its wide headlights and taillights. A premium seat package could be added on top of the various trims, giving the Alphard heated and cooled middle-row captain chairs.

Engines available for the second generation AH20 Alphard were the gasoline 2.4L inline four-cylinder AZ-FE mated to the seven-speed Super CVT-i automatic and the 3.5L V6 six-cylinder 2GR-FE mated to a six-speed automatic. The hybrid Alphard received the 2.4L inline four-cylinder 2AZ-FXE mated to e-CVT.

3rd Generation (AH30; 2015-2022)

The AH30 Alphard was redesigned with a 50 mm longer wheelbase, a 60 mm increase in overall length, and a 20 mm increase in width, in line with Toyota's continued effort to develop a "luxury saloon with a large space." The exterior also received a makeover. Most prominently, the front bumper was trimmed to make room for a larger, bolder grille. Internally, the floor of the new platform used by the Alphard was flattened, allowing for greater seating customizability, with the second row of seats able to slide back and forth up to 1160 mm. This new platform, known as Toyota's MC, also came with a new double-wishbone rear suspension.

Powering the third generation Alphard were gasoline engines: the 2.5L inline four-cylinder 2AR-FE, the 3.5L V6 six-cylinder 2GR-FE, or the 3.5L V6 six-cylinder 2GR-FKS mated an eight-speed automatic, which replaced the 2GR-FE from 2018. The petrol hybrid comes with the 2.5L inline four-cylinder 2AR-FXE.

4th Generation (AH40; 2023-present)

Toyota ups the ante with the fourth-generation Alphard. Its exterior is powerfully and dynamically styled in a theme that Toyota terms "Forceful x IMPACT LUXURY." Inside, the space between the first and second rows of seats and the second and third rows of seats was increased for even greater lounging space. This generation of the Alphard was the first Toyota to have Universal Steps, which emerged when both the left and right-hand side sliding doors were opened.

The fourth-generation Alphard engines are the petrol 2.4L inline four-cylinder turbocharged T24A-FTS, the 2.5L inline four-cylinder 2AR-FE, and the petrol hybrid 2.5L inline four-cylinder A25A-FXS.

Engine Performance & Technology

Toyota's Alphard engines are reliable and deliver exceptional performance and fuel efficiency, whether inline four-cylinders, V6 six-cylinders, petrol, or hybrid petrol. Some also feature turbochargers that allow them to produce more horsepower for their given size.

The T24A-FTS used in the fourth generation is part of Toyota's Dynamic Force engine family, which was developed to achieve an environmentally conscious, smooth-driving performance.

Safety & Reliability

The Alphard has consistently received good ratings in safety assessments thanks to its comprehensive range of safety features, which includes standards like an advanced airbag system made up of front airbags for the driver and front passenger, side and curtain airbags, ABS, and EBD (depending on model year and trim).

Advanced safety features available (depending on model year and trim) include Proactive Driving Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist, and Pre-collision Warning with Semi-Autonomous Emergency Braking.

Trim Configurations

The trims available for the Alphard vary by model year and generation. For example, the second-generation Alphard comes in the X, S, G, S-C, G-L, and Royal Lounge trims, which have different levels of features like sunroofs, captain's chairs, premium sound systems, safety systems, and so on.
