About TOYOTA Land Cruiser Prado

Named after the Spanish word for "field" or "meadow," the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado boasts a range of capabilities as broad as its moniker. For over 30 years, the Land Cruiser Prado has been the go-to choice for drivers demanding a rugged, no-nonsense full-sized four-wheel drive that could serve double duty as a lifestyle vehicle. Going off the well-paved roads is no obstacle for the Land Cruiser thanks to its outstanding off-road capabilities. It also fits in on the city streets with its tough yet polished styling and luxurious interior.

One can't be faulted in thinking that such a versatile machine would command a substantial price tag. But the Land Cruiser Prado remains affordable, offering drivers a high-performing, reliable multi-purpose four-wheel drive at a low price point. With so many things going right for it, you'll be taking no risks in choosing a Land Cruiser Prado as your next trusted vehicle.

Origin

Before it was the "Prado," this Land Cruiser existed as the light-duty version of the 70 series born in 1984. The only layout was a three-door short body that came with either a soft or hard top. 2.4L petrol and diesel engines were available, arriving mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

1st Generation

To throw a contender into the ring with Mitsubishi's prize fighter, the Pajero, Toyota added long-wheelbase versions to the 70 series, then separated the wagon range of the series (both short and long-wheelbase versions) from the series and named it the Land Cruiser Prado de facto. This first generation came with a 2.4L inline four-cylinder SOHC turbo diesel and, later, in 1993, a 3.0L inline four-cylinder turbo diesel. Body styles were the five-seater, three-door, or the eight-seater five-door, while transmissions were a five-speed manual and an electronically controlled four-speed automatic.

2nd Generation

The second generation beginning in 1996, signaled a turn of the Land Cruiser Prado into a more passenger-oriented four-wheel drive. Toyota enlarged both the long and short body versions, giving passengers more seating room and space for their items, while a full-time four-wheel drive replaced the part-time four-wheel drive. Engines were:

・The 3.4L 5VZ-FE V6 six-cylinder DOHC gasoline.
・The 3.0L 1KZ-TE inline four-cylinder SOHC turbo diesel.
・The 2.7L 3RZ-FE inline four-cylinder DOHC gasoline engine (added in 1997).
・The 3.0L 1KD-FTV diesel (from 2000).

3rd Generation

2002 and the third generation of the Prado saw significant strides made in terms of safety and performance. Among the many improvements made was the introduction of the H∞-TEMS (Toyota Electronic Modulated Suspension), electronically controlled rear air suspension systems, and a high rigidity frame for added maneuverability and vehicle stability. Engines were the 2.7 L 3RZ-FE inline four-cylinder, 2.7 L 2TR-FE inline four-cylinder, 3.4 L 5VZ-FE V6 six-cylinder, and 4.0 L 1GR-FE V6 six-cylinder petrol, and the 3.0 L 5L-E inline four-cylinder diesel, 3.0 L 1KZ-TE inline four-cylinder turbodiesel, and 3.0 L 1KD-FTV inline four-cylinder turbodiesel.

4th Generation

The fourth and current generation of the Prado has been in production since 2009. Though short-wheelbase models continue to be made available overseas, only the long-wheelbase Prado is sold in the domestic Japanese market. The fourth generation of the Prado has also been made even more versatile thanks to moveable second-row seats and stowable third-row seats. The engine lineup is made up of the petrol 2.7 L 2TR-FE inline four-cylinder and 4.0 L 1GR-FE V6 six-cylinder, as well as the turbodiesel 2.8 L 1GD-FTV inline four-cylinder and 3.0 L 1KD-FTV inline four-cylinder, and diesel 3.0 L 5L-E inline four-cylinder.

As a testament to how well-equipped with features like advanced 4WD and many electronic gadgets this generation of the Prado is, it has been badged as the 2010 model year Lexus GX 460 with luxury trim in the States.

Engine Performance & Technology

The Land Cruiser Prado comes with a variety of Toyota petrol and diesel engines ranging from 2.4L to 4.0L. In June 2015, the petrol engines of the Land Cruiser engine were improved with Toyota's Dual VVTI, which adjusts timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts (versus intake-only in the VVTI) to deliver even more power and fuel efficiency.

Toyota's short-lived H∞ TEMS (Toyota Electronic Modulated Suspension) increases or decreases ride-damping force in response to certain drive situations and makes an appearance in the third-generation Prado. Toyota chose to discontinue it due to the high cost of upkeep.

Safety & Reliability

The Prado gets a whole host of safety equipment and systems. Most models come with standard features such as an anti-lock braking system, electronic stability control, and Toyota's Star Safety System. This system includes electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and traction control, in addition to the aforementioned technologies. Toyota's Safety Sense crash avoidance can be found on newer versions of the Prado.
