About TOYOTA Toyoace

Toyota's Toyoace has been a household name in the commercial vehicle industry for more than 60 years. Drivers value the medium-size pickup truck for its utility, versatility, and, as expected from any Toyota vehicle, value and unparalleled reliability. The Toyoace is available in a wealth of configurations and engine sizes and has evolved over the years to incorporate more advanced mechanisms and technology to service businesses even more effectively.

Origin

Toyota debuted the semi-cabbed, four-wheeled Toyoace in 1954 as the Toyopet SKB light truck. It was meant as a superior alternative to three-wheeled trucks afflicted by problems such as instability, poor weather resistance, and inferior ride comfort. A reduction from the initially offered price proved highly successful, and the Toyoace was able to compete with three-wheeled trucks, eventually contributing to their replacement with the four-wheeled variety.

1st Generation (1954-1959)

Initially known as the Toyopet SKB, the 1-ton 2-seater Toyoace was renamed in 1956 through a public naming contest. The Toyoace was restrained yet practical--an identity that it would carry with it for its entire production lifecycle--with a flat windshield and hammock-style seats. Other body styles available for the first generation were the panel van, light van, and double-cab truck.

The engine for the first generation was a 1.0L inline four-cylinder type S.

2nd Generation (1959-1971)

The second-generation Toyoace retained its semi-cabbed engine design while its seating capacity was increased from two to three thanks to a shift of the engine backward, the adoption of a column shifter, and an overall increase in body dimensions. This generation of the Toyoace was the first among Japanese-made trucks to feature a tilt-cab mechanism that improved vehicle serviceability.

For its engine, the second-generation Toyoace retained the type S until 1959, when it was replaced with the 1.0L type P, which had 44 hp over the type S's 33 hp.

3rd Generation (1971-1979)

The Toyoace was redesigned for its third generation, with more interior room, a curved windshield, flush-mounted door handles, a window washer system, improved ventilation and brake performance, and reduced noise and vibration levels. Payloads ranged from 850 kg to 2000 kg.

The engines were the gasoline inline four-cylinder 1.4L 3P and the 1.6L 12R, and the diesel 2.5L inline four-cylinder 2J, introduced in 1972.

4th Generation (1979-1985)

The wheelbase of the fourth-generation Toyoace was shortened for better maneuverability, while a full-cabbed design was taken up for a larger cabin and easier mounting and dismounting. In response to the rising demand for more environmentally-friendly and socially-considerate vehicles, Toyota also improved the Toyoace to meet the stricter 1979 emission and noise standards.

Engines were the gasoline 1.6L 2R and the 2.0L 5R, and the diesel 2.5L 2J and 2.2L Type L.

5th Generation (1985-1995)

The Toyoace bulked up for the fifth generation, with payloads ranging from 1 to 3.5 tons, thanks to the integration of the Dyna's designs into its lineup. A "full just low" version with small diameter radial tires that lowered the floor and made entry and exit was available for the 2-ton model.

The fifth-generation Toyoace included 1.6L and 2.0L gasoline engines, a new 2.0L liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) unit, and five diesel engines --a 2.5L, 3.0L, 3.4L, 3.4L turbo diesel, and a 4.0L.

6th Generation (1995-1999)

For its sixth generation, the Toyoace was fully merged with the Dyna and expanded to include a rebadged wide-bodied Hino Ranger FB sold as the grand cab Toyoace. Other cab types were the standard and the wide.

The engines were 2.0L and 2.7L gasoline, LPG, and diesels were 2.8L, 3.4L, 4.1L, 4.1L turbo diesel, and 5.3L.

7th Generation (1999-2011)

There is an even greater emphasis on safety and comfort, environmental friendliness, and economy for the seventh-generation Toyoace. In addition to the anti-lock braking system becoming standard on all models, five newly developed diesel engines that offered better fuel efficiency were added to the engine lineup. Furthermore, the emission-cleaning device used in a low-emission Toyoace model eventually saw widespread use in other models as well. Other engines were 2.7L gasoline and 2.7L and 4.1L LPGs.

8th Generation (2011-2020)

The Toyoace was redesigned yet again for better comfort, safety, and lower emissions. The wide cab gets expanded door openings, larger steps, and greater seating space, while the shape of the knee and bottom parts of the instrument panel were changed to provide the center seat with more legroom. The front pillars of the Toyoace were narrowed to give a wider field of vision.

A new diesel-hybrid, as well as five new diesels, were added to the engine lineup.

Engine Performance & Technology

Among the engines introduced in the seventh generation was the 2.7L 3RZ-FE gasoline engine. It uses a four-valve twin-cam mechanism for greater power and a balanced shaft for less vibration and noise. The diesels introduced in the eighth generation feature a redesigned high-pressure common-rail fuel injection system and a high-performance catalyst diesel particulate-active-reduction system (DPR) for cleaner emissions and better fuel efficiency.

Safety & Reliability

The Toyoace's driver's seat airbag, ABS, and theft prevention system are available as standard (depending on the model year and trim). For the eighth generation, Vehicle Stability Control, which ensures stability to control skidding, is available as an option.

Trim Configurations

One of the highlights of the Toyoace is the large number of configurations available. Depending on the model year, the Toyoace gets various deck types and body styles, such as a panel van, light van, and double cab, and payloads ranging up to 3.5 tons.

Conclusion

There's dependable Toyoace for every need. When you make the Toyoace truck your next workhorse, it might be the last vehicle you'll need to purchase in more ways than one. Get yours in great condition and at a hard-to-beat price here at BE FORWARD.
