For almost 30 years running, Honda has provided drivers with a comfortable and affordable compact SUV through the CR-V. It remains one of the Japanese automobile manufacturers and the category's best-selling models, counting only the hard-hitting Toyota RAV4 as its equal. Regardless of whether it's for a single, couple, or small family, the CR-V is bound to be considered one of the top candidates for an everyday vehicle.
Origin
The CR-V debuted in the Japanese market in 1995 and was Honda's first SUV designed in-house. Upon release, the CR-V shared a platform with another of Honda's bestsellers, the Civic compact car, giving car buyers a smaller alternative to the midsize SUVs, which included their own model co-designed with Isuzu, the Passport.
Depending on the region, what the letters in the compact SUV's nameplate stand for will vary. In Japan, promotional materials list it as "Comfortable Runabout Vehicle." In contrast, in the UK, it's called the "Compact Recreational Vehicle." If there's anything certain about the CR-V, it checks all the boxes drivers have for a compact SUV while setting new and higher standards for the category with each model year.
1st Generation
The first generation of the CR-V produced from 1995 to 2001 was a different compact crossover SUV than those seen today. In fact, while it was smaller than other midsize SUVs, it was still too large to fit within the domestic Japanese compact car regulations. Nonetheless, it was an outright success, outperforming the Passport launched two years earlier.
This generation of the CR-V featured a unibody chassis with a fully-independent double wishbone at the front and a trailing arm-based multi-link system at the rear for its suspension. Its sole engine was the 2.0L B20B inline four-cylinder, which was later replaced by the 2.0L B20Z inline four-cylinder for more power.
2nd Generation
Significant changes in the second-generation CR-V (produced from 2002 to 2006) included replacing the 2.0L engine with the K24A1 or K20A4 in Southeast Asia. Both featured i-VTEC technology for better fuel efficiency and horsepower. On the outside, the CR-V which continued to be based on the Civic was presented in a sleeker and more modern package, complete with sharper angles and a shorter nose.
3rd Generation
By removing the spare tire from the rear of the CR-V and moving it under the rear cargo area, Honda could shorten, lengthen, and widen the CR-V for a more sporty look. Honda also made more improvements to the CR-V, like adding a fully independent suspension and achieving a quieter cabin. A new Honda 2.4L K-series inline four-cylinder engine powered this CR-V. At the same time, 2.2L i-CTDI diesel was offered in Europe and Asia.
4th Generation
At its release in 2012, the 4th generation CR-V got a new 2.4L i-VTEC inline four-cylinder engine and a new real-time all-wheel-drive with an intelligent control system. 2015 saw the CR-V receive a facelift comprising a new and more efficient direct-injected Earth Dreams engine mated to a CVT, improved body structure, and improved suspension.
5th Generation
The fifth generation began with the 2016 CR-V. This was offered in five- and seven-seater variants outside of the North American market. A facelift in 2019 added a more environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain of a 2.0L inline four-cylinder gasoline engine with Honda's i-MMD hybrid system. Besides the 2.4L Earth Dreams inline four-cylinder engine, a turbocharged 1.5L inline four-cylinder engine is offered.
6th Generation
Low domestic sales of the CR-V led to its discontinuation and replacement by the ZR-V in Japan. Still, the CR-V will continue to be produced in its sixth generation for sale overseas from 2022. The CR-V has been made more comfortable and safer than ever because of improvements like more legroom and the ability to recline in the second row of seats, as well as the addition of rear-side torso airbags and outboard seat belt pre-tensioners. 6th generation engines are the 1.5L L15BE turbocharged inline four-cylinder and the 2.0L LFA1 inline four-cylinder petrol hybrid.
Engine Performance & Technology
Honda's advanced technologies make an appearance in all of the CR-V engines. These include the intelligent VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) i-VTEC that enables equipped engines to achieve higher output with greater fuel economy and lower emissions, and also Honda's Earth Dreams Technology which improves fuel efficiency.
Safety & Reliability
Besides the usual array of standard safety features, the CR-V also incorporates Honda's proprietary safety technologies that help the CR-V consistently receive high scores on safety tests. One such is Vehicle Stability Assist, which combines the Anti-lock Braking System with a Traction Control System with slip-slide control that stabilizes the CR-V whenever it overturns or underturns. The body of the CR-V is also built through Honda's G-CON technology, which aims to absorb and dissipate energy, minimizing injuries to the driver, passenger, and pedestrians.
Trim Configurations
Just one trim was available for the first generation. This was later called the LX when higher-grade EX and SE trims, which featured extras like leather upholstery and chrome grille accents, were added in subsequent generations. For its latest generation, the CR-V comes in the EX, EX-L, Sport, and Sport Touring trims in the US, and E, ES 4WD, EL 4WD, e:HEV ES, and e:HEV RS in Thailand.
Conclusion
The CR-V offers unrivaled value for each iteration's drivability, performance, reliability, and safety. Get yours in great condition and at an affordable price at BE FORWARD.
