About NISSAN Cube

Driving the Nissan Cube is the furthest thing from being square. The aptly named Cube was a delightfully unconventionally-shaped mini MPV from the Japanese automobile manufacturer, popular among the younger crowd during its three generations of production. Its appearance wasn't the only thing fun about the Cube - a spacious cabin and wealth of customization options like seating and cabin features left no one wanting for more. Keep reading to discover more about this unique car and how it can be uniquely yours.

Origin

Between Nissan's supermini, the March, and their Sunny 4-door sedan was a gap waiting to be filled. Enter the Nissan Cube in 1998. The Cube was built on the same chassis as the March. Despite its small size, it housed a roomy cabin, making it a highly maneuverable and practical vehicle perfect for the domestic Japanese market. Have we mentioned that the Cube also came with a low price tag?

1st Generation (Z10, 1998-2002)

The rich number of features on the Z10 included a center-mounted reversing camera, a column shift for its gearbox, and a foot-operated parking brake that freed up room for storage bins - one compartment under the passenger seat and another under the armrest. Highly versatile, the Z10 came with rear seats that can fold flat to increase boot space.

Besides its platform, the first generation Z10 Nissan Cube shared its engines with the March: 1.3L naturally aspirated inline four-cylinder CG13DE and CGA3DE with fuel efficiencies of around 14.7km/l. These were mated to a four-speed automatic transmission, with optional CVT continuously variable transmission and four-wheel drive.

2nd Generation (Z11, 2002-2008)

As if the interior of the first-generation Cube wasn't enough, Nissan upped the ante with an even larger interior for the second-generation Z11. The Cube tradition of rich customization options continues in the Z11 with available options like an air ionizer for air cleaning, Nissan's 'smart key', which lets the driver access the Cube without using a key, a sunroof, and 12 different front grilles. This addition to Cube trims came with different body kits and fender flares.

Engines for the Z11 are the 1.4L CR14DE and the 1.5L HR15DE inline four-cylinder mated to a four-speed E-ATx automatic transmission or optional JATCO XTRONIC CVT-M6. E-4WD was also available as an option.

3rd Generation (Z12, 2009-2019)

The third generation Z12 is the Cube's final iteration, arriving with a more rounded and curved rear end created by an asymmetrical rear window that wraps around to the passenger side. Its backdoor opens like a fridge, making loading and unloading a breeze. Curves continue to find their way into the Z12's interior, inspired, according to Nissan's designers, by the 'enveloping curves of a jacuzzi'. Though production of the Cube ended with the Z12, it didn't spell the end of personalization - the pride of this mini MPV. Accessories for the Z12 included multicolor appliqués that can be placed around air vents and window switches, different colored utility hooks and elastic bands, and LED lighting for the footwell and cup holders in various colors.

Depending on the market, the Z12 received a 1.5L HR15DE, 1.6L HR16DE, or 1.8L MR18DE inline four-cylinder gasoline, as well as a 1.5L K9K inline four-cylinder dCI common rail direct fuel injection diesel engine. Transmissions were a five- or six-speed automatic transmission, or Nissan's CVT, depending on the engine.

Engine Performance & Technology

The HR16DE available for the Z12 is a 1.6L inline four-cylinder renowned for its excellent fuel efficiency thanks to its two fuel injectors per cylinder and Nissan's Variable Valve Timing Control System.

The 1.5L K9K inline four-cylinder diesel of the Z12 boasts common rail direct fuel injection for better combustion efficiency and a highly efficient turbocharger.

Safety & Reliability

You can count on the Cube's range of safety features to keep you and your occupants safe. This expansive list includes all the standards, such as a high-strength and structurally reinforced body and airbags (though the exact number depends on the trim), as well as ABS antilock braking system, ESC electronic stability control, TCS traction control system, TPMS tire pressure monitoring system, a rearview camera, and child safety features like child locks and child seat anchor points (depending on the trim level).

Trim Configurations

The e-4WD trim of the Cube gets an electric 4WD system that drives the rear wheels through the use of an electric drive unit mounted under the boot and between the wheels. The main benefit over a traditional 4WD is that when additional traction is not required, the rear wheels can be completely disengaged from the drive train, thus improving efficiency.
The base trim of the different generations of the Cube provided all the essentials, whereas higher trims brought along features like power windows, air conditioning, keyless entry, audio systems, navigation systems, and more advanced safety systems, as previously mentioned.

Tuned versions of the Cube by Autech (Nissan's tuning division) also exist, such as the Rider, Cube3, and GT models that get chrome stylings and unique seat coverings.

Conclusion

The Cube is a highly versatile and efficient mini MPV, customizable to meet the various needs of drivers everywhere, including you. Find your ideal Cube in great condition and at a competitive price here with BE FORWARD now!
