Origin

Nissan premiered the Elgrand in 1997 as twin vehicles; the Homy Elgrand was sold only at the Nissan Prince Store, and the Caravan Elgrand was exclusive to the Nissan Bluebird Store. It was meant as the successor to the people-transporting Homy and Caravans that offered a higher level of luxury. The Elgrand was an immediate winner, occupying the top share of the high-end luxury minivan segment.

1st Generation (E50; 1997-2002)

The first generation E50 was the Homy and Caravan Elgrand up till 1999 when they were streamlined into what is known as the Elgrand today. From its very beginning, its vast cabin, which lets seven to eight passengers relax in comfort, has been the pride of the Elgrand. The E50 Elgrand was so spacious that it was used as the base of a 10-passenger commercial van, released in 2010 and known as the Elgrand Jumbo Taxi.

The Elgrand needed sufficient horsepower with all its carrying capacity. It had just that in the form of four powerful engines--the petrol 3.3 L VG33E V6 six-cylinder and 3.5 L VQ35DE V6 six-cylinder, the turbo diesel 3.0L ZF30DDTi inline four-cylinder and the 3.2L QD32ETi inline four-cylinder. These are mated to four-speed automatic transmissions. The E50 came in either two- or four-wheel drive.

2nd Generation (E51; 2002-2010)

If there's nothing wrong, why change it? Well, Nissan built more atop the solid foundations that made the E50 a major success with the second generation E51 Elgrand. It's no exaggeration to say that the Elgrand was a lounge on wheels - not only was there even less of a shortage of space in the cabin thanks to a greater distance from the accelerator pedal to the back door, cabin width, cabin height, and the distance between the seats, but the seat frames of the Elgrand took design cues from modern furniture. The multifunction center seat of the E51 also created a number of seating arrangements to best suit the passenger's needs, be it more space to sprawl out or to use as a large armrest with built-in cup holders. The E51 featured innovations like Nissan's CARWINGS technology with GPS car tracking/location system and, in 2008, a 4-view camera technology that gave a near birds-eye view for more accessible parking and reversing.

Powering the E51 Elgrand, were the 2.5L VQ25DE and 3.5L VQ35DE V6 six-cylinders mated to five-speed automatic transmissions with Tiptronic shift.

3rd Generation (E52; 2010-present)

"Dynamism and Luxury you can feel" was the concept behind the third generation E52 Elgrand. And felt it was in both its interior and exterior. The E52 was low and wide on the outside, with dynamic lines wrapping the front and sides. It sported darkened windows framed with chrome moldings--a world's first, as well as chrome-coated, polished aluminum-alloy wheels. The inside of the E52 came with an instrument panel wrapped from one end to the other with a gradient wood-tone panel for an additional splash of luxury. For the second row of seats, the E52 adopts Comfortable Captain Seats, which incorporate seat cushion-integrated leg rest, articulated seatback, and three-layered cushion pads that offer a relaxed sitting experience unlike any other. On-the-move movie watchers will appreciate the optional private theatre system equipped with a Bose® 5.1ch Surround Sound and a large 11-inch electronic retractable monitor.

The E52 Elgrand's engines are the gasoline 2.5L QR25DE inline four-cylinder and the 3.5L VQ35DE V6 six-cylinder, both mated to seven-speed automatic transmissions.

Engine Performance & Technology

The Nissan Elgrand's engines are highly fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly, meeting various Japanese emissions standards. Highlights are the 2.5L VQ25DE and the 3.5L VQ35DE V6 six-cylinders in the 2nd and 3rd generations. They belong to the VQ family of engines that made appearances 14 times in Ward's 10 Best Engines list and are capable of exceptional horsepower while maintaining low fuel consumption (276 hp and 9.4 km/l in the E52 that uses the VQ35DE) thanks to the combination of a dual overhead cam (DOHC) and Nissan's advanced fuel injection systems.

Safety & Reliability

As expected from a first-class minivan, the Elgrand comes with all the usual suspects--front and side passenger airbags, front seat active headrests, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), brake assist, and electronic brakeforce distribution- as standard. The third- and second-generation E51 and E52 Elgrands come with 4-view camera technology, and Nissan's Zone Body features a high-strength construction and is designed for pedestrian protection. Available as options (depending on generation) are advanced safety features like Intelligent Cruise Control and Intelligent Brake Assist.

Trim Configurations

The Elgrand's trims are the V, VG, X, XL, Highway Star, Rider, and S Edition, though these depend on the generation. At the top end is the XL, which in the second generation E52 came with a full leather 7-seat interior, an 8-speaker sound system, keyless entry, Carwings, reversing camera, two TV screens, heated seats, and more. In the E52, the Active AFS adaptive front-lighting system was standard on the higher Highway Star trims.

Conclusion

The Nissan Elgrand is a luxurious vehicle that offers comfort and style like no other. With its spacious interior and advanced features, it's the perfect car for those who value both functionality and elegance.
