For its 1st generation from 2001 to 2004, the Terracan's boxy and rugged frame houses either a 2.9L Common Rail Diesel inline four-cylinder which makes 150 hp (or 163 hp for AWD), or a regular petrol 3.5L V6 six-cylinder engine with an output of 194 hp. Both 4AT and 5MT are available. The Terracan received a makeover in 2004 for its 2nd generation that sees a change in headlights and front grill, with its lineup of engines remaining unchanged. The Terracan achieves estimated fuel efficiencies of 6.6 km/l for the petrol model, and 11.5 km/l for the diesel model.
