About HYUNDAI Genesis

Elegance meets the cutting edge in Hyundai's five-seater, full-sized executive sedan, the Genesis. Though now rebranded as the G80 with the Genesis name being moved to Hyundai's luxury car division, since 2008, the Hyundai Genesis has offered drivers stylish good looks, excellent performance, and all the works like advanced safety features and opulent finishings that are on par or with its European luxury car competitors, yet a lower price point. If you want to treat yourself to an executive vehicle without the hefty price tag that usually follows, consider this stunning offering from Hyundai. When you purchase a used one in good condition from a trusted second-hand dealer, you'll get even more of a deal and the same excellent quality.

Origin

2007 gave the world its first glimpse of the Hyundai Genesis. Hyundai designed it as a "progressive interpretation of the modern rear-wheel drive sports sedan" and introduced it as the "Concept Genesis." All throughout its development, Hyundai used a titan in the class, the BMW 5 series, as its yardstick, eventually producing the Genesis that had 14% more torsional rigidity than its European counterpart, a five-star crash rating in each category from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and performance and interior comparable to the 5 and 7 Series respectively, at the price of the 3 Series.

1st Generation (BH; 2008-2012)

Upon its release in 2008, the Genesis came with a long list of equipment, including speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering, four-wheel disc brakes, multi-link front, and 5-link rear suspension, and one of the three engines (depending on the market). The wealth of standard features included cruise control, automatic headlights, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, leather seat upholstery, and steering wheel, heated front seats with power adjustments, power windows, door locks, and mirrors, remote keyless entry and starting, and a seven-speaker audio system with XM satellite radio. Optional were two Lexicon audio systems that offered 7.1 channels and 14 or 17 speakers.

For its engines, the first generation Genesis received Hyundai's first domestic V8 engine, the 4.6L V8 eight-cylinder MPi Tau, the 3.8L V6 six-cylinder Lambda, and the 3.3L V6 six-cylinder Lambda. North American V8 models came with standard ZF 6HP26 6-speed automatic transmission, the same transmission found in the BMW 5 series from 2004 to 2010, while the V6 models got the Aisin B600 6-speed automatic.

2nd Generation (DH; 2013-2016 / G80; 2016-present)

The second generation Genesis was previewed as the Hyundai HCD-14 Genesis concept at the North American International Auto Show in 2013 and later introduced in Seoul. Once again, the Genesis received top marks in safety ratings. For its engines, the second generation Genesis came with the 3.0L V6 six-cylinder GDi Lambda, the 3.3L V6 six-cylinder GDI Lambda, the 3.8L V6 six-cylinder GDI Lambda, and the 5.0L V8 eight-cylinder GDI Tau. All of these engines were mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shift capabilities and in either rear or all-wheel drive.

Engine Performance & Technology

Hyundai has fitted the Genesis with robust engines that offer exceptional horsepower and a thrilling ride. Their Lambda engines, such as the 3.0L, 3.3L, and 3.8Ls found in the second generation, feature gasoline direct injection technology, which increases engine efficiency and power output while reducing exhaust emissions.

A highlight in the range of engines found in the Hyundai Genesis is Hyundai's gasoline Tau V8. The Tau is Hyundai's first domestic V8 engine, featuring a high-pressure die-cast aluminum cylinder block, continuously variable valve timing or dual, and either multi-port fuel injection or direct injection. All these contributed to smooth power delivery and excellent performance, factors that led it to be named to the Wards 10 Best Engine Awards for 2009 and 2010. Best of all, it was available at an affordable price.

Safety & Reliability

Safety has always been a hallmark of the Genesis since its introduction. For its first generation, the Genesis received the top score of 5 stars in each category from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and comes with a long list of standard safety features that include dual front airbags, front and rear side airbags, side-curtain airbags, ABS, brake assist, EBD, traction control, and electronic stability control. More advanced technologies were available for its second generation, such as standard daytime running lights, optional blind spot detection, lane departure warning, and lane departure prevention, among many others. Furthermore, the 2015 and 2016 Genesis came optional with an automatic emergency braking system that received "superior" ratings for its ability to avoid front collisions at 20 km/h and 40 km/h tests.

Trim Configurations

Upgrade packages for the Genesis brought along more premium features, such as the 18-inch alloy wheels that were part of the Premium Plus Package for the first generation. A 5.0 R-Spec was also available for the first generation from 2011 to 2014. This came with the 5.0L V8 eight-cylinder GDI Tau engine and luxurious features such as a 19-inch Premium Machined Finish alloy wheel, Unique headlamps w/ dark chrome inserts, sport-tuned suspension calibration, Unique R-Spec embroidered floor mats, R-Spec rear deck lid badging, and deleted woodgrain from the leather steering wheel.

Conclusion

The Hyundai Genesis is an elegant and high-performing luxury sedan that won't fail to give you an exciting and safe ride. What's more, it comes in at a more affordable price than its luxury car counterparts in the same category. If you want to make a used Genesis your next vehicle, purchase one from a reputable used car dealer like BE FORWARD.
