Two engine types are available – 2.5L inline-six with 218ps/25.5kgm (GH-PA25) and 3.0L inline-six with 272ps/32.1kgm (ABA-PC30) both which are gasoline. The transmission is 6AT which controls full-time 4WD. The torque distribution system called "xDrive" which prefixes torque 40:60 (front and rear) and splits it ideally by instantly and electronically judging the conditions of roads. The DSC system assures stability and traction, enhances braking ability with start-off assistance, brake stand-by, brake-dry, and anti-fade function.
Compared to its big brother the X5, the X3 is compact, but is able to achieve speed and maneuverability in its 1855mm wide frame through its low center of gravity and even weight distribution between front and rear. The fuel efficiencies of X3s released after October 2006 have markedly improved from 7.9km/l to 9.2km/l in the 2.5L engine and 7.6km/l to 8.4km/l in the 3.0L engine. The 2.5L and 3.0L models come fitted with 17 and 18 inch wheels, respectively. Automatic anti-glare side mirrors and Park Distance Control parking assistance come standard across models released after September 2006. Other safety features include front, rear, and side airbags.
