2005 TOYOTA Hiace Van
HiAce Van Overview
The HiAce Van is the van model of Toyota's HiAce series of cab-over pickups, delivery vans, and stretched commuters. Over its five generations, this lineup of vehicles has endured in its role of providing small businesses across the globe with versatile solutions for transportation.
What makes the HiAce Van stand out among other models in the series, like the HiAce Pickup and HiAce Commuter, is its multi-purpose design with a unique combination of a large trunk space that is ideal for commercial hauling of freight or tools paired with its passenger-ferrying capabilities.
HiAce Van Generations
1st & 2nd Generation
Upon the HiAce Van's first-generation release in 1967, it was sold as a 4/5 door van. The second generation, beginning in 1977, saw an increase in dimensions, including the introduction of the super-long wheelbase measuring 2,845mm, known as the 40 series, for a total of three wheelbase sizes - standard, long, and super-long.
3rd Generation
In 1982, the HiAce Van received a full model change to mark its third generation. In addition to the introduction of the L-Diesel engine as well as the 1.8L 2Y and 2.0L 3Y LASRE (Lightweight Advanced Super Response Engine) gasoline engines, the cabin roof of the super-long van was slightly raised, the size of door openings was increased for easier loading and unloading, and 3/6/9 seater options were added for more customizability of space allocation.
The Just Low series of vans with a flat trunk floor bed and smaller diameter double rear tires also made its appearance for the first time. These are specialized versions of the HiAce Van that reduce the height of the roof to the floor bed to lessen vibrations on bumpy roads. 1985 also saw a minor change with 4WD models also being added to the third generation.
4th Generation
The HiAce Van entered its fourth generation in 1989 with multiple changes to make it ready for the changing needs of more demanding consumers to come in the '90s. Driveability and dynamism were improved thanks to the introduction of the newly developed 2.0L 1RZ gasoline engine as well as the fuel-injected 2.0L 1RZ-E and 2.4L 2RZ-E gasoline engines.
Further improvements of load-carrying capacity and ease of loading and unloading - both already synonymous with the HiAce Van brand - were made possible because of changes in the engine position that allowed for a widening of both the cargo space and the sliding door opening. Throughout the next 15 years, other improvements such as the addition of a 3.0L diesel engine for 4WD models were also introduced.
5th Generation
Launching the fifth generation in 2004, Toyota once again expanded the HiAce Van's size and functionality. With the standard body size of fourth-generation models being discontinued, the latest model features two body types - long and super long - with size increases of up to 765mm in length, 190mm in width, and 305mm in height. Depending on the model year, the diesel engine is either a 2.5L 2KD FTV, a 3.0L 1KD FTV, or a 2.8L 1GD FTV (2017 onwards), while the gasoline engine is sized at either 2.0L or 2.7L.
Engine Performance & Technology
HiAce Vans require exceptional engine performance due to all the trunk space freed up for transporting heavy cargo. The already well-working 1KD FTV diesel models of the fifth-generation HiAce Vans were once again redesigned in 2010 to deliver even better performance. Besides a boost in horsepower to 142 hp from 134 hp, this remodeling brought about greater engine sound dampening and lower fuel consumption.
From 2014 onwards, gasoline HiAce Vans began featuring Toyota's Dual VVTI (Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence) engine built upon the existing VVTI. The Dual VVTI engine adjusts timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts (versus intake-only in the VVTI) to deliver even more power and fuel efficiency.
Safety & Reliability
Toyota doesn't hold back when it comes to safety features on the HiAce Van. While on one hand giving the HiAce Van a new look, the front nose of the fifth generation has been extended to increase force absorption and redistribution, and also reduce cabin deformation during crashes. For model years 2017 onward, HiAce Vans get the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) crash prevention package as standard. The TSS control system is made up of millimeter-wave radar and a single-eyed camera that is able to detect and avoid hazards as well as mitigate damage from accidents.
Trim Configurations
Are you ferrying as many people as you are hauling cargo? The third-generation, nine-seater, high-roof Super Long Van combines the best of both worlds by providing the ability to carry loads of up to 600kg, all while providing enough space to comfortably seat a large group of passengers. The nine-seater Super Long Van comes with either a diesel or gasoline engine.
But if you are looking to splurge, the Long Van Super GL is the flagship trim of the fifth generation. It seats up to five passengers while carrying 850 to 1000kg depending on the passenger load, and comes with foldaway and “all-flat” seats, front fog lamps, and cosmetic upgrades such as a chrome front grille, wide-view side mirrors and door handles, and high-grade full wheel-caps.
Since the ability to transport items is as much about load capacity as it is size, Toyota also offers the fifth-generation Super Long Van DX with a high roof and standard floor. Measuring 1,635mm high, 1,730mm wide, and 3,540mm long (2,070mm with seats up), the trunk of the Super Long Van is spacious enough to fit items of the largest dimensions. It comes as either a three or six-seater in 2WD or 4WD.
