First released in 1996, the SLK derives its initials from Mercedes-Benz's design mission - to forge a "sportlich" (sporty), "leicht" (light) and "kurz" (short) roadster. In the 2015 lineup of the third-generation SLK-Class (R172), also known as the SLC-Class, are the SLK 200 MT with a 1.8L 181 hp inline four-cylinder DOHC turbo engine, the SLK 350 with a 3.5L 302 hp V6 six-cylinder DOHC engine, the performance model SLK 55 AMG with a 5.5L 416 hp V8 eight-cylinder DOHC engine, the SLK 200 Trend + and SLK 200 Exclusive with a 1.8L inline four-cylinder DOHC engine, and the special SLK 200 Carbon Look Edition based on the SLK 200 Exclusive. Besides the SLK 200 MT that uses a six-speed manual transmission, all models for this generation receive a seven-speed automatic transmission in FR configuration.
Previous generations of the SLK-Class, such as the 2nd generation R170, feature a 2.3L 194 hp inline four-cylinder ICS charger engine on the SLK 230, a 3.2L 215 hp V6 six-cylinder SOHC engine on the SLK 320, and a 3.2L 348 hp V6 six-cylinder SOHCS charger engine on the SLK32 AMG.
