The Mazda RX-7 is the world's first and only pure sports coupe that makes use of a light and compact Wankel rotary engine. In its 24-year run, the Mazda RX-7 went through three generations and made Car and Driver magazine's "Ten Best" list five times.
The first generation (1978-1985) comes only as a two-door coupe, while for its second generation (1985-1992), the RX-7 receives a revamp to both its appearance and performance. These include the adoption of an independent rear suspension, rack and pinion steering, and disc brakes. This generation receives either a 1.3L 13B twin-rotor engine that makes 146 hp (for 1986-1988 model years) or 160 hp (1989-1991), while the 13B-T turbocharged version is capable of 185 hp (1986-1988) or 200 hp (1989-1991).
The third and final generation of the Mazda RX-7 (1992-2002) comes with a more rounded appearance, as well as the incorporation of a 1.3L sequential twin-turbocharged 13B-REW engine that is capable of 252 hp with its first release, with an increase to 276 hp in later years. Besides the Touring-X trim, which is mated to a 4AT, all other trims get a 5MT.
