The S3 is Audi's sporty 3 door hatchback. Through ultra-lightweight engineering, Audi has been able to achieve never before seen levels of lightness in the S3. Audi's "S" series represent higher performance models compared to its regular "A" series. Therefore, S3 is the fortified version of A3. The first generation 2002 S3 uses a 1.8L inline four-cylinder DOHC (Double Overhead Cam) intercooler turbo engine that outputs 222 hp. This engine arrives mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and uses a full-time 4WD. Suspensions are McPherson strut in front and double wishbone with trailing arm in the rear. Safety devices are dual & side airbags, ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) with EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution), EDS (Electronic Differential Lock System) and ESP (Electronic Stability Program).
For its more recent model years such as the 2014 S3, Audi has increased the size of S3 while compressing its body for a more streamlined look. The number of doors has also been increased to five and the 1.8L engine has been swapped out for a 2.0L 286 hp inline four-cylinder turbo engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.
